Reading is a powerful way to learn, empathize, and grow, and this has been wonderfully evident in our 1st ESO English classes. This term, students embarked on an emotional and thought-provoking journey through John Boyne’s novel The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.
The story, set during one of the darkest periods in history, captivated the students while inspiring important conversations about empathy, friendship, and moral courage. Through the experiences of Bruno and Shmuel, students were encouraged to reflect on themes such as prejudice, discrimination, and the consequences of ignorance.
Our young readers did more than just engage with the narrative—they explored the historical context of World War II, learning about the Holocaust and its profound impact on humanity. Discussions in class fostered deep reflections on values like kindness, justice, and respect for others.

One student shared, “This book made me think about how important it is to stand up for what is right and to always treat people with kindness, no matter who they are.”

Another noted, “It’s a story that stays with you because it teaches us not to repeat the mistakes of the past.”
Beyond historical insights, this reading experience helped our students develop critical thinking skills. They analyzed character motivations, explored symbolism within the story, and wrote reflective essays that showcased their personal growth and understanding of key moral concepts.

We are incredibly proud of the thoughtful discussions and meaningful reflections shared by our students. This literary journey has been a reminder of the transformative power of stories and how reading can shape compassionate, thoughtful individuals.
Congratulations to all our students for their engagement and willingness to learn from this unforgettable reading experience!
