This term, our 1st ESO English students explored John Boyne’s novel The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, a story that encouraged them to reflect deeply on essential human values. Through the innocent perspective of childhood, students discovered how literature can help us understand complex moral questions in a meaningful and accessible way.
As students followed Bruno’s journey, they explored the importance of friendship and how genuine connections can develop even in difficult and unfair circumstances. Bruno and Shmuel’s relationship allowed students to reflect on loyalty, kindness, and the courage it takes to treat others with compassion, regardless of differences.

The novel also provided opportunities to discuss the role offamily and how family relationships influence the way children understand the world around them. Students considered how Bruno’s limited understanding of his father’s role highlights how children often see situations very differently from adults, encouraging thoughtful conversations about perspective and innocence.
Another key focus of our discussions was the idea offairness and injustice. Students reflected on how some characters are treated differently simply because of who they are, leading them to consider the importance of standing up for others and recognising the consequences of both positive and negative choices. Through guided activities and classroom debates, students examined how small decisions can have significant impacts on people’s lives.
Throughout the reading project, students developed their ability to think critically and express their ideas thoughtfully. They analysed character decisions, discussed moral dilemmas presented in the story, and completed reflective writing tasks that demonstrated their understanding of the values explored in the novel.

We are extremely proud of the maturity, empathy, and respect our students demonstrated while engaging with this story. This reading experience has reminded us that literature is a powerful tool for helping young people reflect on ethical values and understand the importance of making responsible and compassionate choices.
Congratulations to our students for their thoughtful participation and engagement with this meaningful learning experience.
